The bustling market town of Aylsham is celebrating 20 years of Cittaslow status, the international network of towns and cities that promotes quality of living.
As the sole representative of Cittaslow in England, and one of only three Cittaslow towns in the UK (the other two are in Wales), Aylsham proudly stands at the forefront of a global movement aimed at enhancing daily life through a slower, more thoughtful pace of living.
To mark this special occasion, the north Norfolk town has organised a series of events throughout the year, kicking off with the International Street Food Fair in July, showcasing a variety of cuisines from around the world.

Following this, the local pubs, bars, restaurants and cafes will come together for a week-long celebration of food and drink, highlighting the town’s commitment to local produce and sustainable living.
The festivities will culminate in Aylsham’s renowned Food Festival in October, organised by sister organisation Slow Food, also celebrating 20 years.
Slow Food Aylsham has been instrumental in promoting local food, environmental sustainability, and healthy living in the area.
“It’s said that a family that eats together stays together – and that’s why the festivities focus on food and drink. We are a market town surrounded by farms and growers and consider ourselves Norfolk’s rural capital of food,” said Patrick Prekopp, chair of Cittaslow and Slow Food Aylsham.
“We are incredibly proud of the lasting impact Cittaslow has had on our community,”
“Being part of the Slow Movement has allowed us to foster a vibrant, mindful community that values quality of life and sustainability.
“These celebrations are a way to thank everyone who has contributed to our success over the past 20 years, while also welcoming new visitors to experience Aylsham’s unique offering.”
The town pioneered the plastic bag-free revolution in the UK in 2008 leading the way in trying to change shopping habits. More than 70 local businesses joined the scheme.
Other environmental initiatives include the formation of the Aylsham Climate Emergency committee in 2021 and the recent Town Transport strategy in a bid to improve traffic management in the town.
It helps boosts the local economy by sponsoring the monthly Food & Craft markets and weekly general markets.
In community terms, it acts as an umbrella organisation to bring other clubs and societies together like the WI, Aylsham Business Consortium, U3A, Rotary and Aylsham In Bloom, which aspires to bring a sense of pride to the town by use of colourful and seasonal displays.
As Aylsham reflects on its 20-year journey within the Cittaslow network, it remains committed to continuing its mission of improving the wellbeing of its residents and visitors, while showcasing the best of local food, culture, and community spirit.
