The trail of the Slow Food Aylsham snail is gathering pace as Stamford in Lincolnshire is the latest Foodbank to adopt the group’s Canny Cooking recipe books.
This follows Rutland Foodbank who are also using a bespoke version of the Aylsham book.
Compiled by SFA members, the easy-to-read, 24-page, fully illustrated handbooks, Canny Cooking and Canny Cooking 2, contain simple recipes and food tips based on the contents of a typical food bank parcel – mainly non-perishable canned and dried foods.
It all started in 2020 when Slow Food Aylsham teamed up with North Norfolk Foodbank based in Cromer who are distributing free copies of the book across all their centres spread over 200 square miles of north Norfolk.
Now Stamford has selected 30 recipes from the two recipe books and will create their own local version – but retaining the style and Aylsham branding.
Siân Fytche, Stamford and Oundle Foodbank Operations Manager, said: “Having a cook book like Canny Cooking, will help our clients make the best use of what we are able to give them from food donated by the local community.
“We are also planning to run some pilot cooking workshops where we will prepare some of the recipes with clients and use the opportunity to help people learn some basic cooking skills that should improve their ability to cook within a budget.”
